A Call for Compassionate Governance in Troubled Times: Advice to people in Authority
In these challenging times, the socio-economic pressure on citizens has escalated to unprecedented levels. As tensions run high across Nigeria, the role of government and law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and stability cannot be overstated. It is imperative that those in authority exercise compassion and restraint, especially when dealing with minor misdemeanors, including traffic offenses.
Rather than imposing heavy fines or incarceration for such offenses, a more understanding approach of issuing warnings or pardons would help de-escalate tensions. Harsh punishments, even for minor infractions, can push citizens closer to the edge of frustration and despair, leading to potentially dangerous outcomes for individuals and society as a whole.
We urge government officials and law enforcement agencies to recognize that harshness inl governance during times of collective hardship may fuel unrest, depression, and even suicidal thoughts among citizens. Now, more than ever, we need a compassionate approach that uplifts rather than oppresses.
For the greater good of the nation, let us prioritize human dignity, understanding, and second chances over punitive measures. Let compassion be the guiding principle in all actions.
